Commenting on the announcement by BBC DG Tony Hall that he will be carrying out pay reviews across the BBC, Sam Smethers Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society said:

"It is good to see the BBC taking action to address the gender pay gap across the organisation. But it must be a thorough, independent review with a genuine commitment to act quickly on any pay inequality they find.

"Closing the gender pay gap will mean the BBC makes the most of its female talent - this has to happen from top to bottom. Addressing the lack of ethnic diversity throughout the organisation will bring it closer to the communities it serves and address the additional barriers that black and minority ethnic staff face. But only if they act on the findings of the reviews."

The BBC will carry out three reviews into equal pay, following the publication of the salaries of its highest-paid stars in July.
