Leading historian and writer, Dr Amanda Foreman, will today deliver the Millicent Fawcett Memorial Lecture and use the occasion to challenge ‘no platforming’ in our higher education institutions and elsewhere. She will argue that women need to be exposed to ideas which challenge their view of the world in order to be able to cope with a misogynistic and patriarchal society.

‘No platforming’ is a controversial practice which has divided opinion.  Some argue that it is necessary to prevent offensive or allegedly transphobic or discriminatory views from being aired.  Others that those with legitimate views are being silenced in the debate. The Fawcett Society believes in being a home for feminist ideas and giving voice to a range of perspectives. Dr. Foreman’s is an important voice in the current debate about the boundaries of free speech and, like Fawcett, she believes it is critical that all women are encouraged to speak out and be heard.

Commenting ahead of the lecture, Dr Foreman said:

“Free speech isn’t a feminist issue because women have always liked talking, it’s because men have always liked silencing. The only difference between no-platformers and misogynists is the degree of hatred they feel for freedom. Let women’s voices ring out for the sake of a fairer and more just society.”
