35% of the Cabinet (up from 32%) are women and just 26% (19 of 74) of junior ministers are women (it was previously 24%).

Commenting on the proportion of women in Theresa May’s government Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society said:

“This is disappointing. It’s essentially a standstill picture and represents a missed opportunity to get more women into government.

“But it’s also in part a function of the lack of women on the government benches. Despite recent progress just 1 in 5 Conservative MPs are women.

“There has to be a strategic focus on the pipeline of women standing for parliament.

“But what matters now is how will the Government of Theresa May deliver for women.”

Local and Equal – does local government work for women? was a year long commission by the Fawcett Society and Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) to answer this question.
