A group MPs are supporting an amendment to the Voyeurism Bill, led by Stella Creasy MP, which seeks to ensure that if the crime is motivated by misogyny then that will be considered by a court as an aggravating factor when considering the seriousness of the crime for the purposes of sentencing. This amendment would be the first step to recognising misogyny as a hate crime - crimes motivated by hostility based on race, religion, trans identify, sexual orientation, or disability are already recognised as hate crimes. The amendment is supported by Citizens UK, Tell MAMA UK, Dimensions UK, Fawcett Society, Stonewall, and Southall Black Sisters.

Fawcett Society Chief Executive Sam Smethers says:

“Up-skirting objectifies women, is a misogynistic act and should be recognised as such. Fawcett supports Stella Creasy’s amendment because unless we recognise the scale of misogyny in our society we won’t begin to address it. Misogyny is a hate crime and targeting women because they are women should be regarded as an aggravating factor in such crimes."
