Ms May called upon her party to use positive measures to select candidates for its top 100 target seats at the next general election.

She quoted Fawcett research showing that at the current rate it would take the Conservatives 400 years to achieve equal representation in Parliament.

Ms May said: "If the Conservative party were a multinational company, it would be investigated for its equal opportunities polices..

"I have no doubt that the election of more women MPs in the House of Commons would change and improve the standard of debate and the way business is conducted in Parliament."

A spokeswoman for the Fawcett Society said: "We warmly welcome Theresa May's call for positive measure. International evidence show they are the only way for any party to significantly increase their numbers of MPs.

"We hope others within the Conservative party will recognise the good sense of Ms May's comments and put them into action."
