Seeing double: campaign overview

Fawcett launched a campaign on ethnic minority women in 2007.

The needs and experiences of ethnic minority women have long been overlooked in public policy leading to persistent disadvantage in all areas of ethnic minority women's lives.

Fawcett's campaign aims to combat the 'double invisibility' of ethnic minority women by bringing awareness and policy attention to this 2.3 million-strong population. As far as we are aware, this is the first ever UK-wide project of its kind.

What is the issue?

For ethnic minority women, gender inequalities are complicated by inequalities they face on the basis of race and ethnicity. While not at all an homogeneous group, it is clear that ethnic minority women share experiences of discrimination and disadvantage.

As our report Black & Minority Ethnic Women in the UK showed, the corridors of power are still closed to ethnic minority women and their exclusion shows at every level of society. See the 'Related publications' box on the right of this page for key statistics and to download the report.

What Fawcett is doing

Fawcett has launched a three year programme to make ethnic minority women's persistent disadvantage visible to policy makers. We will promote the voices, needs and interests of ethnic minority women to ensure that there are changes in policy and practice that deliver real improvements to their lives. Our themes will cover Fawcett's full programme of work, namely Power, Money and Justice.

Our work is steered by an expert advisory group. You can download a list of the members using the blue download box on the right hand side of this page.
