Fawcett on the Tax Credit Amendment

Commenting on the House of Lords vote on Tax Credit amendment, Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society said:
“Tonight’s vote is a victory for fairness for low income households & for gender equality! There is no doubt that women would be disproportionately hit by the proposed changes. Women are more likely to be on low incomes, relying on tax credits and a disproportionate number of those affected are single parent households. 92% of single parents are women. An equality impact assessment & the DWP’s own Family Test would provide more than enough evidence to make the Government think again. We welcome the introduction of the living wage but the tax credit changes would penalise hard working parents who are doing the right thing & taking responsibility for themselves & their families.”
