New Measures on Gender Pay Inequality

Responding to the Government’s announcement today Sam Smethers, Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society said:

“In our response to the Government consultation the Fawcett Society called for including bonuses and also extending the new regulations to the public sector so it is good to see that the Government has taken that on board.  These are important steps forward.

“But we still have a long way to go.  Alongside publishing a headline gender pay gap figure, employers should also explain how they got there and set out an action plan to tackle it.  Addressing women’s lack of progression at work and opening up senior roles to flexible and part-time hours would make a real difference.

“The Government could be bolder in terms of women’s representation on boards. Ending all male boards for the FTSE 350 is actually quite a modest ambition. We should be asking why some companies can achieve 40% or more women on their boards while others have none.  A time-limited use of quotas would overcome some of these entrenched barriers and speed up change.”
