Fawcett's Director awarded OBE (16/6/08)

Director of the Fawcett Society, Dr Katherine Rake, has been awarded an OBE for her services to Equal Opportunities in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Commenting on the award, Katherine Rake said:

“I am delighted to have received this prestigious honour. It is wonderful that award gives public recognitions to the work of the Fawcett Society in promoting women’s rights. And it is particularly fitting that this award comes in 2008 when Fawcett is celebrating the 80th and 90th anniversaries of women winning the vote (2).

"I am honoured to be able to lead an organisation with such historical strengths and to ensure that the campaign for a better world through women’s rights is fit for the next generation.”

(2)  In 1918 legislation was passed that granted women over 30 and married women the right to vote. In 1928 women finally won the full franchise, when the voting age was lowered to 21.
