Fawcett responds to Gordon Brown's podcast

Press Release: 8th March 2010

The Fawcett Society welcomes the Prime Minister’s call for action on getting more women in to Britain’s board rooms. It’s shocking that today many (25) of our FTSE 100 companies don’t have a single woman on their board and only 10% of board directors are women. But what we really need much bolder proposals if we are really going to make a difference such as the positive action quota system adopted in Norway which saw women’s boardroom representation rise from 6% to 44% in just six years.

We would also like to hear a lot more than we have from Gordon Brown and the other party leaders about how their policies on key election issues such as tax and public spending, crime and democracy will help not hinder women’s inequality.

Today Fawcett, with over 40 partners, has launched an election campaign today called What About Women? Despite a charm offensive from all the parties to win women’s votes we don’t think any of them have said enough on how their policies would tackle women’s inequality and we would like some answers.

It’s also telling that the other parties have done little to recognize International Women’s Day and we’re continuing to press all politicians to take women more seriously in the run up and after this election.”
